In 2019, I found myself consistently reaching for distractions; the most consistent being alcohol. One night, I went to a party with a few friends intending on getting a little drunk and having a good time. The next thing I knew, I was dizzy, nauseous and collapsing onto the concrete. At this moment I realized I didn't stick to my intentions. I didn't just have a few too many. I had gone way too far. I threw up until I couldn't anymore, had a panic attack, blacked out and woke up to police flashlights shining into my face. I was carried onto a stretcher, put in the back of an ambulance and driven to the hospital. I went through two bags of intravenous fluid in under two hours. This was a turning point for me. I realized that every time I reached for a drink, I wasn't just getting drunk or having a good time, I was trying to escape the present moment. Throughout the years that followed, I gained a deeper understanding of myself. The only way for me to live through my value of embracing the present is sobriety. Because of this, I aim to inspire others to embrace sobriety, even if just for a moment. If you usually drink when you go to a show, next time, don't. If you usually suggest going to a bar with your friends, next time, don't. Choose somewhere else where alcohol or whatever distraction you're reaching for isn't an option for you. See how you feel. Experience the moment as it is, unaltered. Exist as you are, unaltered. Exist here.”
